What motivates you to do this work? I want to be a part of the queer community in Baltimore. Helping improve our overall sexual health is a great way to get involved and make a difference.

What motivates you to do this work? I have been working in public health and HIV since 1992. I became involved after my uncle Gino died from AIDS in 1990. He had a support network of family but there were so many others that did not, so I got involved.

Zodiac Sign and/ or Fun fact: I was just selected for a part in a musical – the Wizard of Oz with Brown Memorial Players. I will be the Lion. The play production team must have a sixth sense because in my personal life over the past year or so, I have been working on developing a greater sense of self-worth and courage. Life is funny sometimes.
Title/What you do on the USHINE team: I am a Co-Principle Investigator on the USHINE team, and with colleagues I conceptualized and wrote the grant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for USHINE.
What motivates you to do this work? No person should still be getting syphilis in this day and age. It is diagnosable and treatable. Approximately 20 years ago, we were on a trajectory to eliminate syphilis until federal funding was cut so low that the disease starting making a resurgence. With the USHINE funding, we now have a new opportunity to make inroads against syphilis and the co-epidemic of HIV.

What motivates you to do this work? HIV and STI’s can be prevented. I want to help reduce disproportionate rates of sexual diseases in communities. I believe that research in collaboration with the community it is intended for can truly help to reduce the rates we see. We work better when we work together!

What motivates you to do this work? I am interested in providing service to the LGBTQIA+ community and creating easier access to healthcare for those who experience more barriers. I hope to play a role in identifying and breaking down these barriers to ultimately reduce health disparities.

What motivates you to do this work? Working with the USHINE project combines my passion for research and concerns for social justice in the field of public health. It is the dream opportunity to work in Baltimore’s community and work towards advancing the availability of resources for those in need so that they can be their best (and healthiest) selves.
